Google Pixel 8 is the new best buy? SIM

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will continue to feature a physical SIM card slot. In recent days, there were rumors suggesting that Google’s flagship devices, set to be unveiled in just over a month, would shift to support only eSIM. However, anonymous sources from 9to5google claim otherwise.

This wouldn’t be an unprecedented choice, as iPhone 14 models in the United States already operate this way. Perhaps Google deemed it premature to take the leap, considering that not all carriers in every market offer eSIM support, which could potentially complicate international travel in certain cases. Concurrently, Google is working on a solution to make transferring eSIM between devices more straightforward, and it’s reasonable to assume that this will debut with Android 14.

Google Pixel 8 is the new best buy? implementing Night Sight

The same sources also add that Google is working on implementing Night Sight, a feature known for enhancing low-light photography, for video recording. This feature will be exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, making it significantly more adept at capturing videos in low-light conditions. Currently, it’s not entirely clear what hardware differences between the devices might prevent the distribution of “video Night Sight” on the Pixel 8. Given Google’s past approach, it seems unlikely to be an arbitrary decision to artificially add value to the more expensive of the two models.

Google Pixel 8 is the new best buy? Key element

It’s plausible that a key element of this feature will be the next-generation Tensor chip. Google has consistently improved Night Sight, with enhancements ranging from hardware improvements, such as a larger sensor and a more precise laser autofocus system on the Pixel 6, to advanced algorithms that benefit from the Tensor chip’s faster motion detection on the Pixel 6. On the Pixel 7, exposure times were halved thanks to the introduction of more advanced HDR, bracketing support, and new machine learning-based algorithms.

Google Pixel 8 is the new best buy?

In general, it’s worth noting that Google has recently adopted a pattern of introducing new photography features first for still images and then extending them to videos. This approach makes sense because videos require more processing power. Last year, for instance, the Pixel 7 introduced the ability to capture portrait-mode videos thanks to the addition of Cinematic Blur.
